Uefa’s Champions League final has for the first time beaten the Super Bowl as the most-watched annual sports event worldwide. An average audience of 109 million watched the 2009 Champions League final between Barcelona and Manchester United, on May 27, compared to 106 million for the Super Bowl.

The Champions League final’s total audience – the number of people that tuned in for at least part of the event – was 206 million, compared to 162 million for the Super Bowl.

The figures were reported by Reuters, from a report by UK research agency Initiative Futures Sports and Entertainment.

Formula One’s Bahrain Grand Prix came third with an average of 54 million, and the men’s 100m final at the athletics World Championships came fourth with 33 million.
